We know that a weekly blog about industrial packing and crating may not be the most exciting read for many of you out there, even for us industry folk. We can admit that at times our attempt at humor can come off drier than dry bulk cargo (see what we mean?). That’s why every once in awhile we like to take a departure from industry news and tips and dive into a few fun facts and tidbits as they relate to our business in a round about way. To spice things up this week we thought we’d focus on shipping containers and how in 2014 some amazing innovations are taking place that take the use of these containers to whole new levels. No, we’re not talking about a new way to stack pallets or brace piano shipments within them, we’re talking about concepts that are inspiring architects, designers, retailers, and artists to borrow our primary cargo carriers and transform them into something completely unique.
Amazing But True Shipping Container Concepts of 2014
1. Luxury Detached Kingdom in Oz

The concept of using recycled shipping containers as affordable housing has long existed. While they serve their altruistic functional purpose there was little innovation in architecture and design. However a home builder in Australia (Oz) recently completed a luxury home from the ground up using a total of 31 brand new shipping containers. This creative three-story residence was erected on an over 700 square meter lot with a crane along with careful placement and welding, taking just 6 months from day one to completion. Erected last year, this upscale new-concept home is up for grabs in 2014 and with all of the press it’s been receiving we’re sure a hip jet-setter will scoop up the containerized home in no time at all.
2. JENGA-like HIVE-INN Hotel Design

A Hong Kong firm took honors in 2014 Radical Innovation with this shipping container hotel concept that reaches for the stars with its JENGA-like design. OVA Studio’s ambitious project seeks to build a first-of-its-kind structure with a behemoth network of metal frames where sponsor decorated shipping containers would be slotted tightly into each section, creating the most unique vacation accommodation concept around. Only time will tell if they can become a practical reality but no matter the outcome it owns the 2014 title for radical thinking when it comes to shipping container uses.
3. The Great Shipping Container Shopping Mall of Instanbul

Open air malls are being taken to the next level with this recent GAD Architects addition to the shipping-container-as-retail-space concept. A series of containers were sectioned and spliced to make an aesthetically pleasing yet functional shopping zone where consumers could not only marvel at the collection of goods for sale, but at the walls and ceilings that displayed them all. Every year these steel cargo carriers are converted into retail vessels and this Istanbul variation is as cool as they come.
4. Las Vegas Downtown Container Park

Sin City does it again with this last-but-not-least addition to this new shipping container series. Downtown Container Park has become a major 2014 destination for those seeking a unique shopping, dining, playing, and event experience. This popular desert destination is all the rage with visitors flocking away from the Strip to see what the fuss is all about.
